Naan (Oven-Baked Indian Bread)
A soft and fluffy traditional Indian bread, naan is perfect for pairing with curries and stews, with a slight charred flavor from being cooked in a hot oven or skillet.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 2 tbsp melted butter or ghee
- Optional: chopped cilantro or minced garlic for garnish
Instructions
- Mix flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl. Add yogurt and warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover the dough and let it rest for 1 hour.
- Divide the dough into small balls and roll each into an oval or round shape.
- Heat a skillet or tawa over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for 1-2 minutes on one side until bubbles form. Flip and cook the other side until golden spots appear.
- Brush with melted butter or ghee and sprinkle with cilantro or garlic if desired. Serve hot.
