Croque Monsieur (Ham and Cheese Toast)

A classic French sandwich, Croque Monsieur is made with ham, melted cheese, and a creamy béchamel sauce, toasted to perfection.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
  • Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add milk while whisking, cooking until thickened. Stir in Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
  • Spread béchamel sauce on one side of each bread slice. Layer ham and half the cheese on two slices, then top with the remaining bread, béchamel side up.
  • Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the sandwiches.
  • Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
