
Croque Monsieur (Ham and Cheese Toast)
A classic French sandwich, Croque Monsieur is made with ham, melted cheese, and a creamy béchamel sauce, toasted to perfection.
Ingredients
- 4 slices of white bread
- 4 slices of ham
- 1 cup grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add milk while whisking, cooking until thickened. Stir in Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
- Spread béchamel sauce on one side of each bread slice. Layer ham and half the cheese on two slices, then top with the remaining bread, béchamel side up.
- Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the sandwiches.
- Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
