Croque Monsieur (Ham and Cheese Toast)
A classic French sandwich, Croque Monsieur is made with ham, melted cheese, and a creamy béchamel sauce, toasted to perfection.

- 4 slices of white bread
- 4 slices of ham
- 1 cup grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add milk while whisking, cooking until thickened. Stir in Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
Spread béchamel sauce on one side of each bread slice. Layer ham and half the cheese on two slices, then top with the remaining bread, béchamel side up.
Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the sandwiches.
Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
