Lasagna alla Bolognese

A rich and hearty Italian classic, Lasagna alla Bolognese combines layers of pasta, flavorful meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and melted cheese.

Ingredients
  

For the Meat Sauce (Bolognese):

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 carrot finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 400 g canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine optional
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg optional
  • 1/2 tsp salt

For Assembly:

  • 12 lasagna sheets pre-cooked or oven-ready
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions
 

  • Heat olive oil in a pan and sauté onion, garlic, and carrot until softened. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, and red wine (if using). Season with salt, pepper, and oregano. Simmer for 20-25 minutes.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and whisk until smooth. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until thickened. Season with salt and nutmeg.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Spread a thin layer of Bolognese sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Layer lasagna sheets, Bolognese sauce, béchamel, and a sprinkle of mozzarella. Repeat layers, finishing with béchamel and a mix of mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling.
  • Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
