Char Siu (Honey and Spice Barbecued Pork)
A traditional Cantonese dish, Char Siu features tender pork marinated in a flavorful mixture of honey, soy sauce, and spices, then roasted to perfection.
Ingredients
- 500 g pork shoulder or tenderloin
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine or dry sherry
- 1 tsp five-spice powder
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 garlic clove minced
- 1 tsp red food coloring optional, for traditional appearance
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix honey, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, Shaoxing wine, five-spice powder, sesame oil, garlic, and red food coloring (if using).
- Place the pork in a resealable bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the pork, ensuring it is well coated. Marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking tray with foil and place a wire rack on top.
- Remove the pork from the marinade, reserving the marinade. Place the pork on the wire rack and roast for 30 minutes.
- Brush the reserved marinade onto the pork and roast for an additional 10-15 minutes, basting occasionally, until the pork is cooked through and caramelized.
- Let the pork rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with steamed rice or noodles.
