
Onigiri (Rice Balls)
A staple in Japanese cuisine, Onigiri are handheld rice balls filled with savory ingredients and wrapped with nori (seaweed).
Ingredients
- 4 cups cooked Japanese short-grain rice cooled to room temperature
- 4 sheets of nori seaweed, cut into strips
- 1/2 cup filling of choice e.g., salted salmon, tuna mayo, pickled plum, or cooked vegetables
- Salt for seasoning
Instructions
- Wet your hands with water and sprinkle a pinch of salt on your palms to prevent sticking.
- Take a handful of rice and flatten it slightly. Place about 1-2 teaspoons of filling in the center.
- Fold the rice over the filling and shape it into a triangle or round shape, pressing gently to secure the filling inside.
- Wrap a strip of nori around the rice ball or at the base for easy handling.
- Repeat the process with the remaining rice and fillings. Serve immediately or store in a container for later.
